Resin Kits

Resin kits are an interesting art form - you buy a bunch of solid polyurethane parts, clean them up, bond them together, smooth the seams, prime, and paint - and hopefully you don't mess up (because they're expensive).

I like the challenge of painting them - it's a nice change from digital art......

This is a kit that I'm producing - I've taught myself the process (from cleaning up the rapid prototype parts, to moldmaking and casting the resin) - and I'm working on a book on how to take CG art and make it into "physical" art. You can see the model/image this is based on here, and you can see a larger version of this montage image here

This is a kit by Mike James - but I painted it a bit differently than he did. Translucency is a challenging effect (for the costume material).

This is the "same" kit, but I resculpted it fairly extensively. The skin requires about 6 colors and 4-5 coats of varying density to get good skin tones....

A pseudo-anime kit - (my first kit, actually). I ended up painting it twice since some too-sticky tape decided to take all the paint off down to the primer (grrrrrrr). The second time around, the paint looked a lot better - so I guess it was meant to be. I won a kit-building competition on one of the kit-building sites with it.
